(From Chris Stella, FLOC Organizing Intern) On September 26th, 2013, a contingent of community activists gathered in front of the Kangaroo Express on Green Valley Road in Greensboro, NC. Supportive motorists honked as they drove by. Groups represented were UNCG NC Student Power Union, Greensboro ISO, Greensboro IWW, NCAE and Organize 20/20. A letter was delivered to the manager on duty asking that Kangaroo respond to Rev. Nelson Johnson’s request that Kangaroo contact Reynolds about consumer concerns regarding conditions in NC tobacco fields.
After politely asking the manager to fax the letter, we were told that “she would not do that.” I told her that we’d be back with a larger group next time. Following the event phone calls were made to The Pantry, Inc. (Kangaroo parent company), and messages left letting them know, even if the manager had refused to fax the letter, that we’d been there and why.
